The group, aged 12 to 14, included students from The Angmering School, Davison High School, Durrington High School, Shoreham Academy, St Andrews High School for Boys and Worthing High School.

The intensive, week-long course is designed to encourage students to become positive role models among their peers and within their communities.

The course, run by West Sussex firefighters in partnership county youth services, concluded with the students performing a fire drill.

They also demonstrated the new skills they had learned at a special ceremony in front of an invited audience of family and friends.

Students worked side by side with firefighters on a structured programme of events, combining both classroom-based workshops with practical activities such as hose and ladder drills.

They also achieved a British heart Foundation first aid qualification and learned about the personal and social impacts of road traffic collisions.

Lee Neale, deputy chief fire officer for West Sussex, presented the students with their graduation certificates.

He said: “Firefighters are strong role models so a course like FireBreak gives us a fantastic opportunity to inspire and motivate young people, particularly those who may be struggling within the school environment.

“FireBreak is a tough challenge for the students so they should take great confidence from their achievements this week.

“We now hope that they use this experience with us as a springboard to continue achieving and making a positive contribution in other areas of their life, both inside and outside the school environment.”
