Young runners raise £1,700 for hospice

A GROUP of 17 youngsters, aged between five and eleven, took part in a charity Fun Run at Icklesham Recreation Ground on Saturday to raise money for St Michael’s Hospice.

The fund riaiser was the idea of seven-year-old Matthew Brand, one of the youngest members of the Icklesham Players, who wanted to do something in memory of Joan Baker, a local resident who passed away in May of this year.

Joan had been a very active member of the Players and was an inspiration to all the young members, always guiding, praising and encouraging them.

The children, including two of Joan’s grand-daughters – Ellie aged eleven and Connie aged eight – wanted to do something in return to show their admiration and gratitude to Joan and chose to run for one of the charities that she supported, St Michael’s Hospice.

After a lively warm- up, all the children ran (and sometimes walked) around the field five times.

Supported by an enthusiastic crowd of on-lookers they raised an amazing £1,700

The run was followed by a jumble sale in the village hall, organised by Joan’s family and friends.

This raised a further £1,000, which will be split between the Hospice and the Joan Baker Memorial Fund.

The Baker family and Matthew would like to thank everyone for their wonderful support.

Taking part in the run were Ellie and Connie Baker; Matthew Brand; Harley Glazier; Kiera Aslett; Beth and Isabel Morton; Samuel and Benjamin Folley; Tom and Kate Wilkieson; Charlotte Wall; Chelsi Turner; Lydia Fraser; Henry and Hannah Barnicoat-Hill and Amelie Croft.
