Their achievement culminated in a ‘Pass Out’ and award ceremony on Friday June 24 where they performed a fire drill and proudly demonstrated the new skills they’d learned to their invited family and friends.

FireBreak is an innovative youth programme run by West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service in partnership with County Council colleagues from Youth Services. It is aimed at young people between 12 and 14 and actively encourages students to become positive role models among their peers and within their communities.

The course ran over five consecutive days at the fire station, where the students took part in a range of activities including fire service drills and team-building exercises. The participants also learnt about the importance of fire safety, the consequences of road traffic collisions and learned life-saving first aid techniques.

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service Youth Instructor, Simon Woodland, who led the course, said: “It was a pleasure to work with these young people and very rewarding to see them flourish as this week progressed. FireBreak is a very challenging course and it takes real determination to succeed.

“Our fire service runs on a culture of teamwork, discipline and mutual respect and we instil those values into everything we do during a FireBreak course. We’re committed to bringing out the very best in the young people we work with.”

The students were from The Weald, Tanbridge House School, The Forest School, Ifield Community College and Hazelwick, Visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/fire
