SENIOR doctors at Worthing Hospital emerged reeling from a "clear-the-air" meeting with trust managers last week after being told that TOTAL CLOSURE was an option.

The move would wipe out 44million of the mounting health debt owed by the region and the big winner would be St Richard's Hospital, Chichester, which would keep all its vital services.

Staff at the hospital were said to be "devastated" when the nightmare option was disclosed during the meeting with the local primary care trust '“ the body which holds the immediate purse strings for the hospital.

One staff member said: "The news spread like wildfire and morale hit a new low."
