Barkers scrap book a beauty

IN 2006, after 135 years of retailing, Barkers Department Store in Kensington High Street, London, closed for good.

Around this time, I acquired a personal scrap book from The British Heart Foundation shop in Lewes High Street. It is a beautiful object full of fashion photographs, press cuttings and original programmes from the opening of Barkers Fashion Display Hall in 1929 and the mannequin parades.

I have given it to a friend who is now using it as a research tool for an MA in the History of Design.

Does anyone remember donating this item, perhaps an ex-employee or member of Trevor Bowne’s family, the vice president of Barkers.

Any information would be gratefully received.
