Bishop found the perfect compromise for Berwick Church

I was interested to read the story about Berwick Church (Background to Berwick Church paintings revealed, March 15).

I interviewed Duncan Grant on his 90th birthday in 1976 and was told this account of the paintings: the idea of painting directly on to the walls of the church was hugely controversial and many residents opposed the idea.

Bishop George Bell of Chichester came to the rescue with a compromise: the artists should paint on plasterboard panels which would prevent the desecration of the walls.
