Depression a misunderstood illness

Your front-page story about the tragic death of Chris Smith underlines how misunderstood depression is.

Many people still see those suffering from depression as weak, when the opposite is true. They are people who have tried to stay strong for too long.

The NHS has treated mental health sufferers as the poor second-class citizens.

Given that depression is the most common ailment for GPs to treat, I hope that Chris Smith’s death will help to focus society on doing more for depressives.
