Of the 20 Conservative councillors left on the county council, nine of them are serving Wealden District councillors. Is this really good for local democracy? Can they genuinely do a good job serving two masters? Or are they doing it for the money. I am told a district councillor can claim up to £10,000 pa in expenses. Presumably a county councillor gets more.
Perhaps it’s time the county and district councils were merged into one authority and saved the hard pressed Sussex rate payer some money.
If Wealden Conservative Association could not find nine candidates who were not already serving councillors, it does not bode well for the future of the party locally.
