Fossil fuels - bank-rolling climate change

Everyone is aware of the need to shift away from fossil fuels and towards renewable energy – everyone, it seems, except the big energy companies, the banks that finance them, and the government.

The UK finance sector is bankrolling climate change, with shares in fossil fuels worth around £900 billion on the London Stock Exchange. Much of this is ordinary people’s money, but customers of the big banks and hedge funds have little influence over where it goes.

Not only are coal, oil and gas putting the planet and our future in danger, they are also devastating the areas of the world in which they are extracted, and the lives of the people who live there.

I’m taking part in the World Development Movement’s campaign calling on the government to stop UK finance companies pouring billions into fossil fuels. I hope some of your readers will join me.
