Fracking - Police activity resulted from protest

It is rather rich of Charles & Kathryn Metcalfe (No Fracking in Balcombe Society) to complain of police activity in their village (letters, August 9) when this has been caused by their own actions and those of the professional protesters they have welcomed in.

Other Sussex taxpayers will have to fund police overtime and to suffer a loss of policing in their own communities because of this hysterical over-reaction to Cuadrilla’s exploration for oil.

The media are filled with misinformation and scare stories with very scant attention to scientific fact.

To take one example, fracking is said to cause earthquakes and it may do; but these are more accurately described as tremors, scarcely detectable at ground level (Blackpool tremors were measured at 1.5 and 2.3), whereas impounding water in reservoirs has caused 39 earthquakes of magnitude up to 7.8. The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale, which means that a quake of magnitude 8 is a million times as powerful as one of magnitude 2.

If we want to keep heating our homes with gas and generating electricity the chimera of wind generated power with its associated turbines and pylons is not the solution and we should welcome properly controlled and licensed exploration for UK-sourced oil and gas.
