Government can’t be expected to pay for closed pier

I note that the correspondence relating to the Hastings Pier and complaints about lack of Government support for the Hastings Pier ignore the vast differences between the two disasters. Eastbourne Pier was a thriving business and people have lost money because of the fire.

When Hastings Pier burnt it was empty, closed not by the owners but by the Hastings Borough Council some years before the fire. I also note that the High Court has held that Hastings Borough Council is responsible for an economic loss by one business.

The Government of whatever political colour could not be expected to pay for a derelict and closed business. Hastings Borough Council caused the loss, not the fire.
