Hailsham rents kept too high for shops to prosper

I visited Hailsham for the first time today, and I was struck by the number of empty shops in the otherwise very attractive town.

I was told that all the leases are owned by just two families who increase the rents to a high level.

This forces the shops to move out or close.

Is this in fact true? It is a sure way to kill off small businesses and artisans.

I would be grateful if anyone can enlighten me about this situation.

I have recently moved from France to Polegate.

French villages have a similar problem. Now the local Frenchman may have to go many kilometres to fetch his daily baguette.
