High rents - we all end up as losers

THE root cause of the sorry phenomenon of so many empty shops in Lewes is greed.

Consider the case of Stephen Catlin’s much-missed shop in the High Street. For well over a year, the only activity to be observed in the premises is an occasional visit by a chap with a broom to deal with the cobwebs and with the dead leaves which blow in under the door.

The owner who demanded an inflated rent and the local authority seeking an unreasonable rate have received no income at all; all parties are losers in this situation, not least the public. We have been deprived of a characterful and useful shop because of stupid avarice.
