Delighted to see so many St George’s flags out today, April 23, to celebrate our English national day! Whatever our views on prime ministers alive or dead, national identity rises above the political fray. Yet even more of us are British, so should we celebrate our British nationality too.
But when should we hang out our Union Jacks with the Scots, the Welsh and the Northern Irish? And even more these days in the UK are European, and there is no such problem there. Europe Day, May 9, is the occasion to celebrate with star spangled blue flying over the rooftops. Our heritage is rich, our identity many layered – let’s not sell it short, let’s celebrate it all. And put out more flags!
