Lewes’s dark past

YOUR report (September 7) on a Heritage Open Days guided tour of Lewes Town Hall, including cellars where the Lewes martyrs were incarcerated, is currently of much interest. Scarcely a day passes without some faith group complaining that Christians are being persecuted. In fact it is their intrusiveness and demands for even more privileges that are being resisted.

Of course Christians have been persecuted throughout history. But they are no longer allowed to burn, hang and dismember each other for thinking differently. This is not due to a revelation from On High. Humanity has been enlightened by the advance of scientific knowledge and the influence of great thinkers like Charles Darwin and Thomas Paine.

The Lewes martyrs’ fate is a dark part of the town’s history.
