Tories aren’t the only ones circulating ‘deceptive’ leaflets in Lewes

I heartily agree with Gaby Weiner (letters, February 27 - Latest Tory leaflet is an “outrage”).

She rightly complains about the deceptive Conservative production which has been circulated around the Lewes constituency. But readers should note that the Tories are not the only guilty party. Recently I have received two editions of something called ‘South Downs Observer’ which at first sight appears to be an independent free newspaper.

No such thing. Its provenance is soon apparent from the photograph of an ubiquitous politician which appears on virtually every page.

There is a story going round, which I am sure is apocryphal, that a major party recently commissioned an opinion poll survey in those constituencies which it hopes to cling on to at the next election. It is said to have included the question: ‘Greens, Labour and UKIP can’t win here. Who are you going to vote for?’

They should remember the old saying: you can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all the of the people all of the time, as they will discover in May.
