THE illustrated report, Easter Begins With a 12ft Cross (April 13), is a distasteful reminder of the sadism at the heart of Christianity. If adult believers wish to process through the streets carrying a symbol of suffering and death, that is their choice. Unfortunately, children are being involved and witnessing such gory displays.
Outdoor mock crucifixions are increasing every year. This is one reaction to emptying pews. The Anglican Church is in a state of disarray and the Sunday School movement in terminal decline. Appeals and gimmicks have failed to halt the haemorrhage of membership and commitment.
Easter is the most important festival of the church year. Yet the date staggers around the calendar like a tipsy curate.
