What is British culture?

I was interested in reading Peter Griffiths’ letter headed ‘Our culture is being diluted’ (May 2). What on earth is British culture?

Our language is largely derived from Germanic tribes, our script from the Phoenicians, our traditional religion is that of a nomadic tribe of the Middle East, our basic beverage was derived from the Chinese, our legal system is based on that of the Romans, while our esteemed concept of democracy was first formulated by the Greeks. Our royal family is largely of German origins. And finally even our very British fish and chips is a mixture of Jewish and French cuisine.

The EU debate is not about culture but about politics, and what kind of coercive state should dominate our lives.
