Youth Games

MORE THAN 300 children from 15 schools across the county took part in the third annual Sussex Parallel Youth Games held at Olympos, Burgess Hill recently.

The games offered young disabled athletes the opportunity to show off their skills and receive much-deserved recognition. Children from special schools across Sussex competed in sports including boccia, new age kurling, wheelchair basketball, basketball, tennis and cricket.

The young people were greeted at the opening ceremony by sporting champion Clare Strange, a top British wheelchair basketball player who competed in the Sydney and Athens Paralympic Games in 2000 and 2004 respectively.

Mid Sussex District Council staged the event at Olympos Burgess Hill leisure centre free of charge, as part of the Council's commitment to social inclusion and better lives.

It was Olympos Burgess Hill's first Olympic Legacy event after being approved as a 'Pre-Olympic Games Training Camp' by the London organising committee of the Olympic Games.

The event was a fine example of partnership working between Mid Sussex District Council, the Sussex County Sports Partnership Trust and volunteers from local and special schools.
