Youth service scheme ‘Snack Wagon’ rolls into Horsham

Sainsbury’s of Horsham is also supporting the project by providing the ingredients for ‘toasties’ and bottles of water.

The Snack Wagon is a mobile youth provision that offers support for young people aged between 13 and 18 years and will provide services for two evenings each week over the summer holidays.

The ‘graffiti-ed’ vehicle acts as an informal meeting place and will provide a safe space for young people where they are already gathering and will be in the Needles area on a Tuesday evening and Roffey area on a Thursday evening.

Youth workers engage with the young people on specific issues identified and provide information and advice on a range of topics.

Youth Workers also engage with young people on issues that matter to them with a view to giving advice, support and signposting them to other agencies.

Popular topics of conversation include: education, drugs, alcohol, sexual health, safe driving and other issues affecting young people.

There’s also a range of activities available, such as real ‘beer goggles’, which help young people to assess their alcohol unit intake.

Whilst the Snack Wagon is a partnership project between Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council, the summer project is also being supported through the new Horsham community youth worker employed by Horsham Matters.

Young people from the Horsham ‘Girls Group’, who have recently completed their food hygiene certificates, are working alongside the youth workers as volunteers.
