Youth Speaking Competition at Bexhill high School

STUDENTS from local schools provided a most interesting and entertaining evening last Wednesday when Bexhill High School hosted Youth Speaks - a public-speaking competition organised by the Rotary Clubs of Bexhill and Battle

Richard Harrison, President of Bexhill Rotary, warmly welcomed the teams and their many supporters - including family, friends and teachers.

Two teams at intermediate level (ages 11-13) and five teams at senior level (14-17) keenly competed for the chance to represent the area at the district final at Maidstone Grammar School on February 28.

A guest team from De Lage Waard School, Holland, also took part. Subjects were of team choice and covered matters of international, national, local and current interest. Presentations lasted up to 15 minutes with teams of three - chairperson, speaker and proposer of a vote of thanks - and topics ranged from chivalry and respect to chocolate and size zero models.

The winning teams were from Claverham Community College (intermediate) where Theodore Gregory, Iola Hughes and Lucjan Kaliniecki spoke on the subject of Chocolate - Vice or Virtue? and St Richard's Catholic College (senior), with Sam Amis, Victoria Turner and Megan Milarski on Designer Babies.

Each team was presented with a commemorative certificate and book token by Tom Tagoe, President of Battle Rotary Club, and the winning team received the Youth Speaks Shield.

Patrick Donaldson, chairman of the organising committee, thanked the hosts and the adjudicators - Michael Hodge MBE, Caroline Sherrard and Observer editor Peter Lindsey.
