Youth Speaks is a national competition run every year by Rotary International in Britain and Ireland. It is a test of public speaking ability.

The competition was the opening local round organised by the Rotary Clubs of Battle and Bexhill. The winners will go on to the district competition in Maidstone on February 27. Regional and national finals will follow. Last year, Claverham made it through to the national finals.

The competition was held at St Richard’s Catholic College in Bexhill with teams from St Richard’s, Battle Abbey School, Bexhill High Academy, and Vinehall School all taking part. There was also a guest team from De Lage Waard school in the Netherlands, who wowed the audience with their mastery of the English language.
