Nokia's classic slider phone from The Matrix gets reloaded

Fancy making phone calls like Neo in The Matrix?

Well, you’re in luck as it’s been announced that the Nokia 8110 – the slider phone made famous by the classic sci-fi film – is making a comeback

This nostalgic piece of kit – often referred to as the “banana phone" due to its distinctive curved shape – was seen as a cutting-edge piece of tech back when it was released in 1996.

Three years later, it was reached cult status by being featured in the Keanu Reeves-starring movie.

Now, HMD Global – who have taken over the Nokia brand – are bringing back the phone as an alternative to high-end smartphones.

It will be a little more advanced than the original, though. The rebooted Nokia 8110 will feature 4G, along with apps such as Facebook, Twitter, Google’s Assistant and Maps.

HMD are marketing the device as a “weekend phone”, and say it will offer users a “chance to switch off, have fun and relax in the knowledge that all your smartphone essentials are there when you need them”.

“The Nokia 8110 comes with the craftsmanship you expect from a Nokia phone, delivering durability and reliability as standard,” HMD say.

“With a familiar and easy to use interface, it features intuitive tactile mechanics, with slide to answer and end calls, as well as an addictive helicopter style spin on its axis.”

The new Nokia 8110 will be available in banana yellow or black, and will cost £69. It is set for release in May.
