Video games have long let you step into the shoes of your favourite footballers with the likes of FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer. Figuratively speaking, at least.

But Virtual Reality Football Club - or VRFC - allows you to get even closer to the action as you don a VR headset and partake in a match.

From developers Cherry Pop Games - who previously made Sports Bar VR and Pool Nation - the world's first virtual reality football game comes to PlayStation VR later this month.

It allows you to dribble, tackle, pass, cross, head and shoot, all in virtual reality, and all from an immersive, first-person perspective.

Playing the field

The game purports to use an "Agile Locomotion" system to allow players natural movement across a virtual field.

With two PlayStation Move controllers acting as your feet, natural arm motions provide the running and kicking, while basic button presses control more precise movements.

Just like real football, VRFC is "easy to pick up but harder to master" claim Cherry Pop Games.

If that sounds daunting, there are a variety of training activities to help you improve your skills.

Drills in the basic controls, striking, passing and target practice are all linked to global leaderboards, so you can see just how well you fare against other players too.

A beautiful game?

You'll be able to play in competitive 5-aside matches with seven other human players (the goalkeepers are controlled by the computer), and players can tackle friends in a private match for some friendly competition.

It's the first game of its kind, and though it may not have the licensed teams and graphical fidelity of games like FIFA, Cherry Pop Games - who specialise in "social VR" experiences - will be hoping the VRFC can provide an immersive alternative to the beautiful game.

Especially helpful when it's raining outside.

VRFC will be released on PlayStation 4 on February 27
