DOWN MEMORY LANE Memories galore of the old days at the Lancastrian

The stories about the Lancastrian schools continue to jog memories '“ and reader Martin Fuller is the latest to get in touch.

He writes:.

I was very interested and pleased to see the photos of the staff of the Lancastrian Girls’ School in the late 1940s and early 1950s in the Observer, sent in by Mrs Pamela Abel, as they featured my mother, Mrs Margery Fuller.

I well remember some of the other staff members pictured, in particular Mrs Crowther, Miss Johns and the headmistress, Miss Tattersill.

My mother became deputy head to Miss Tattersill, but sought a headship of her own in the early 1960s, successfully obtaining one in 1963 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex – by an extraordinary coincidence where she was born and grew up.

She finished her teaching career there, but visited Chichester from time to time to see old friends, particularly Miss Tattersill.

Mum retired in Southend, where she died in June 2001, a little short of her 90th birthday. I much appreciated the messages of condolence I received from former colleagues and pupils from her Lancastrian days.

She was very happy at the Lancastrian school and would, I am sure, wholeheartedly endorse Mrs Abel’s memory that it was ‘a lovely school’.

And Kaye Stubbington got in touch to say:

Pamela Abel was my domestic science teacher – and my husband Roy also lodged with Mr and Mrs Abel way back in the late 1950s.

* More memories from the Lancastrian schools will appear in the Observer next week.
