More than 400 scout groups congregated in Victoria Park

Members of the movement in Haywards Heath and District showed off every aspect of scouting life, each unit demonstrating a particular theme.

The sound of splitting wood and a spitting fire came from the Lindfield camp. They rustled up sausage, savoury rice and jacket potato in their outdoor kitchen.

Throughout the day a large and varied collection of stalls and side shows was staged by administrators and supports of the groups which made up the Haywards Heath District.

The Scout Fellowship and Scout Shop had their own and there was also a refreshment marquee.

The afternoon activities started with an entry of the Haywards Heath Scout and Guide Band, lead by Bandmaster Tony Gilbert, who paraded through town and in the area.

Commentaries on the activities were given by Mr John Button, West Sussex County Commissioner, and Mr Peter Palles-Clark, a former Haywards Heath District Commissioner.

Area events included a tug of war between 1st Lindfield and Haywards Heath mixed teams and a bridge building by 1st Haywards Heath.
