Remembrance services and Armistice events in Brighton and Hove

The Royal British Legion said the following events will take place in Brighton and Hove on Sunday:

Brighton

The Royal Sussex Regimental Association will gather at Regency Square for a Remembrance Service at 9am.

And at 11am, a short service and wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the War Memorial in Old Steine.

Hove

In Hove, there will be a service at the War Memorial at Grand Avenue, and a wreath-laying ceremony at 2.30pm.

From there a parade will proceed to All Saints Church for a full service of Remembrance beginning at 3pm.

At Hove Cemetery, Old Shoreham Road, a short wreath-laying service will take place first at the North Gate Memorial at 11am followed by the same ceremony at the South Gate Memorial.

Portslade

At Portslade, a parade leaves St Nicolas School, Locks Hill at 10.30am, arriving into Easthill Park at 10.40am. The Remembrance Service starts at 10.45, led by the vicars of St. Nicolas Church and includes the two-minute silence and wreath laying led by the deputy mayor of Brighton and Hove.

Other events taking place in the city include:

Battle’s Over

St Leonard’s Church in New Church Road, Aldrington, is playing its part in Battle’s Over, an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I.

St Leonard’s has the last remaining peal of bells in Hove and will be rung in the morning with half-muffled bells to commemorate the dead of WW1; they will ring later in the day to mark the coming of peace.

At 6pm there will be a special Battle’s Over church service in the presence of the Mayor of Brighton & Hove led by the Archdeacon of Brighton & Lewes. A symbolic beacon will be lit and a piper will start the service with a bugler as part of the service at 6.55pm. At 7.05pm the bells will again ring to celebrate the Peace.

There will also be a display about the young men named on St Leonard’s Roll of Honour who lost their lives in the First World War.

i360 Remembrance flight

Members of the public with military connections are invited for a free flight on the British Airways i360 pod at sunset on Saturday November 10 to mark Armistice.

The event is open to former and serving military personnel, including cadets, and each may bring a plus-one.

“During Armistice weekend, as the world remembers 100 years since the end of World War 1, we invite those with military connections to join us for some peaceful reflection on the British Airways i360 pod,” said a spokesperson. “As the sun sinks into the sea, this promises to be a special moment, looking out across the Sussex coastline towards France.”

Places are limited; to secure tickets, guests should show a form of relevant military or veteran ID at the British Airways i360 ticket office before the event. The 25-minute flight departs at 4pm; guests should arrive by 3.30pm at the latest. Those requiring access support, including wheelchair-users, should please call 03337 720360 in advance.

In a further act of remembrance, the British Airways i360 tower lights will turn red on the evenings of Saturday November 10 and Sunday November 11.

Brighton station

To mark 100 years since the end of the First World War, and to remember the railway workers who contributed to the war effort in the armed forces or at home, Govia Thameslink (GTR) Railway will host a commemorative event at Brighton station on Friday, Npovember 9 at 2.30pm. A large poppy will be placed on a ‘Tommy silhouette’ purchased by GTR from the There But Not There non-profit organisation that raises money for military veterans’ charities. Attendees will include representatives of Brighton’s British Legion chapter, the local rail user group and Brighton Council, and Angie Doll, GTR’s passenger services director for Southern and Gatwick Express.

BHASVIC

The sixth form has recreated a military hospital in its main hall, with students re-enacting the roles of WW1 wounded soldiers, doctors and nurses.

There will also be photographic displays from 1914 - 1918 of the military WW1 wards.

From midday on Friday November 9, the British Legion attending with standard and bearer for the last post.

After the commemoration events at BHASVIC will be making a donation to the Sussex Homeless Charity of all the blankets, pillows and sheets used to recreate the military hospital ward.
