MedicAlert UK is proud to announce the rollout of the Herbert Protocol in Sussex, supported by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC). Already successfully adopted by surrounding police forces, this free safeguarding scheme is now being introduced across Sussex to protect people living with dementia and provide peace of mind to families and carers.
Available now at www.herbertprotocol.com/, the Herbert Protocol website enables individuals, families, and carers to complete and securely store a detailed form containing vital information about a person living with dementia. This data is stored for free in the MedicAlert emergency service database, making it instantly accessible to emergency services in the event someone is reported missing.
The Herbert Protocol is named after George Herbert, a Normandy veteran who lived with dementia and tragically went missing. It’s an initiative already in use across neighbouring regions, including Thames Valley and London.
- National endorsement: The scheme is backed by the NPCC, underscoring its importance across other police jurisdictions.
- Now available in Sussex: Families in Sussex can now benefit from this life-saving initiative, joining neighbouring areas already using the Herbert Protocol effectively.
- Free and secure: There is no cost to take part. Users can create a free profile, complete the form and store it safely in MedicAlert’s emergency service database.
- Preparedness in emergencies: When someone is reported missing, police can contact MedicAlert on the 24/7 emergency helpline to access critical information, potentially reducing search time and improving outcomes.
Across the UK, almost 1 million people live with dementia and each year, around 40,000 are reported missing for the first time. The Herbert Protocol helps emergency services have quick access to critical details like a person’s routine, health conditions and meaningful locations. These can make a significant difference in the speed and success of a search.
The NPCC has supported the Herbert Protocol as part of its national commitment to safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

This marks an important step in expanding dementia safeguarding measures across the UK. Families in Sussex now have access to a free, secure service that gives peace of mind and supports emergency services in finding loved ones faster."
MedicAlert UK urges individuals, families and carers across Sussex to visit www.herbertprotocol.com/, create a free profile and complete the Herbert Protocol form. It's a small step that can make a life-saving difference.
