Abbey clinch trophy triumph

ABBEY clinched the latest Hastings & East Sussex Sunday League knockout cup with a 3-1 win over Ridge West Garage in the Peter Harris Memorial Trophy.

Captain Paul Isted fired the Battle-based side into a seventh minute lead at the Pilot Field only for Terry Payne to equalise for the holders 10 minutes later. The vastly experienced Shaun Hardy restored Abbey's advantage just before half time with a thrilling run and finish and David Miller wrapped things up late on.

The previous Thursday, Old King John clinched the Division Three title with a resounding 10-0 win over West St Leonards with goals from Carl Oxingham (4), Matthew Cornelius (2), Kevin Bevis (2), Shane Ryan and Darren Nicol.

Oxingham grabbed four more goals the following Sunday as OKJ swept to a 7-1 success over Welcome Stranger. Also on target were Ryan, Lennie Harbour and Tom Harrison, whilst Sam Harris grabbed a consolation.

Goals from Nathan Harding, Paul Daniels and Anthony Hickman steered The Fountain to a 3-1 victory over West St Leonards who replied through Dan Hilder.

In the first round of the Secretaries' Shield, Bexhill AAC II won 4-2 against Saxons on Thursday, last week with goals from Aaron Cochrane, Adam Taylor, Michael Wood and Willy Edmunds. Johnnie James and Patrick Cosgrove responded.

They followed this up on Sunday with a 9-2 defeat of Sporting Priory. Wood (4), Dan Collins (2), Cochrane, Sam Adams and Darroll Shaw netted, while Steve Winchester grabbed both goals for Priory.

Saxons bounced back by running out 3-1 winners against Seven Stars. Kevin Cosgrove (2) and Martyn Durling did the damage, whilst Terry Cowan replied.

Tom Andrew and Kevin Dixon scored for Hooe GAF in a 2-2 draw with Bo-Peep who hit back through Aaron Barber and Dan Cox.

Silverhill Club secured a 4-2 win over Oddfellows Arms thanks to goals from Danny Woodley, Roy Williamson, Timmy-Lee Saunters and Nicky Stiles, while Alvin Turvey and Andy Bailey replied.
