ALBION V REBELS DATE SET

PLAY-OFF finalists Brighton & Hove Albion will come to Woodside Road for their regular pre-season friendly against Worthing Football Club on July 13 (7.30).

Adam Virgo, whose injury-time equaliser, then penalty kick in the shoot-out played a major part in Albion's semi-final passage past Swindon, is the younger brother of James Virgo who played five games for Worthing this season.

Hednesford Town, despite finishing in a Dr Martens League Premier Division relegation spot, have gone on to win the FA Trophy after surviving a draw at home but winning their replay at Worthing in the last 32.

The Staffordshire club led 1-0, trailed 2-1 but won 3-2 in the final over Ryman League champions Canvey Island at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The winner was scored by defender Chris Brindley, whose volley in the first match against Worthing was kept out by keeper Will Packham to keep Rebels in the tie.

Worthing boss Alan Pook said: "I went to the final and Hednesford had three quality players in who were suspended for our games (even so, Town won the final with their captain banned].

"They gave us a good write-up in the programme for the final, saying we gave them a battering at their place. They're smashing lads, it's a nice club, and they're really friendly.

"Hednesford winning leaves us wondering what might have been but I know that, had we got to the FA Trophy Final, we wouldn't have gone up."

l AND FROM one Worthing town club going out to eventual trophy winners, to another: Bolton Hockey Club, who defeated Worthing Women 2-1 in their EH Vase national semi-final in Lancashire, beat Brentwood on their own Essex territory in the final at Chelmsford on Sunday.

The Lancastrians won 3-1, converting three short corners, after being pegged back at 1-1. Emma Rimmer opened the scoring in the 17th minute '” exactly the same time at which she did the same against Worthing, also from a short corner.

Leading scorer Vicky Hirst made it 2-1 '” she also got Bolton's second in their eventually narrow 2-1 victory over Worthing '” and Sam Buckley got the clincher.
