All-rounder takes the Mickey as Bognor lose at Findon

Bognor were asked to bat first at Findon after losing the toss in their Sussex division three west encounter.

Findon got off to a great start with Mickey Demetriou claiming the wicket of Luke Seward in the second over.

This brought Robert Willway in to partner Max Ashmore and Bognor began to steady the ship in unfavourable conditions. They reached 70 but the introduction of spin claimed Ashmore (36).

With the score at 68 for one, Findon claimed quick wickets in reducing Bognor to 75 for four with Harry Metters (2-28) and opening bowler James Iago (1-41) claiming Bognor’s top order.

Bognor captain James Fallick joined Willway and brought stability to the innings. Willway was eventually caught for 46 off the bowling of Felix Jordan but Fallick remained at the crease and completed a valuable knock of 63 with five fours and three sixes. Bognor ended up on 182 for nine off 53 overs.

Bognor began well with Graham Bush claiming two wickets in his opening spell, using the Findon slope to his advantage.

Findon’s young pair of Jack Metters and Felix Jordan took Findon to 90 for two before Willway claimed the wicket of Metters (38) to break their partnership of 65.

Jordan took the offensive to Bognor with a flurry of boundaries and extravagant running until Bush, in his second spell, had Jordan caught behind for 42.

The game looked to be heading for a draw, but Demetriou, also known in these parts as a Rocks defender, had other ideas for Findon.

Demetriou rode his luck initially but once he found his feet Findon looked for the win as consecutive boundaries were hit.

Findon won by four wickets with two overs left thanks to Demetriou’s 52 not out.

Findon elected to field and made early inroads into Bognor’s batting to reduce them to 57 for three, but a captain’s innings from Ricky McIntosh (97) with support from Liam Geoghegan pushed Bognor forward.

Lusty blows from Rich Cox (42) saw Bognor declare on 251 for six.

Findon started steadily but Bognor pace bowler Andy McGregor took crucial wickets to leave Findon at 102 for five.

A sixth-wicket partnership of 99 from skipper Mark Byerley (32) and Chris Smith (78) put Findon back in the hunt but McGregor reduced Findon to 211 for nine. But the final wicket didn’t come and Findon held out for a draw, McGregor returning six for 61.
