Amazing Grace nets England call-up

Grace Baker’s brilliant cross-country season was capped last weekend with her first international call-up.

The Hastings-based athlete was rewarded for her fourth place in the intermediate girls’ race at the English Schools’ Championships in Nottingham.

Baker’s performance was all the more remarkable given that she was one of the youngest runners in the field and will be in the same age group next year.

Having already claimed the Sussex, Sussex Schools and South of England crowns along with a bronze medal in the National championships, this was her biggest race yet.

The Rye College student was confident of a top 10 finish, but knew only eight girls would be selected to represent England this weekend at the Home Countries International match in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

So in spite of finishing just one second out of the medals, she was delighted with her performance and will race against the best girls from Scotland, Wales and the whole of Ireland.
