Ambitious Conquerors seek new sponsors

THE 1066 Conquerors basketball team have got their senior team back up and running and have won their opening two games of the new campaign.

In their last season (2002-03) the men's team won the Sussex Play-off Cup and finished second in the league, a squad which has been supplemented by some young talent this time around.

So everything in the garden would appear rosy. Well, apparently not. The club, the longest running in the eastern side of the county, urgently needs help from local sponsors if it is to continue to flourish.

Running a basketball team is a huge financial burden with the average cost of holding a home game around 90. On top of this, Conquerors, who also field an under-18s team, need to buy new kit and training tops for both sides.

Moreover, Conquerors offer training for under-13s, under-16s and under-17 girls. The sessions for these teams take place in Battle but the club's players come from Hastings, Battle, Bexhill, Robertsbridge, Rye and Tunbridge Wells.

The men's side will be training on Wednesday evening from 8pm at the YMCA in Hastings and their first home match of the season takes place on Friday November 19 against Brighton Giants from 8.30pm at Helenswood Sports Centre.
