Amy gets her kicks in world event

IF THERE was any doubt about getting out of life what you put into it, then that uncertainty would be dispelled by the story of kickboxing ace Amy Wright.

The Bexhill Predators Kickboxing Club member collected two silver medals at last month's World Championships, having trained a gruelling five times a week in the run up to the event.

Bexhill Predators chief instructor Ed Lofts said: "Amy should be very proud of her hard work and achievements. It was her that put the effort in and it was pretty amazing that she achieved so much so quickly."

It was achieved as a result of all the endeavour, which saw her rise from intermediate to international level in the three months between being notified of her selection by the Great Britain Martial Arts Association and flying out to Cyprus for the event.

On top of her training with the Predators, she also attended the British squad training held by the GBMAA. This took the form of a three hour kickboxing class delivered by four times World Champion, Master Curtis Page.

Even by the end of her training program, though, Amy was still only a purple belt. But she rose to the occasion to come second in the women's semi-contact under-60 kilo section before performing an identical feat in the Olympic Committee-run World Games of Kickboxing and Martial Arts a week later.

"It wasn't necessarily a surprise," Lofts continued, "that she did so well (when she got there), but it was the World Championships and there was tough competition over there. She's definitely got a lot of natural talent and she fought better than ever before with all the pressure of the World Championships and the Kickboxing Olympics on her."
