Anderson races to 10k victory

Seven years after victory in a special one-off race slipped away from him, Daniel Anderson triumphed in another.

The Hastings Athletic Club talent finished second in the Hastings 100th Anniversary Marathon in 2008 after leading for much of the race only to be overhauled in the closing two miles.

But Anderson endured no such late hiccups on a sunny and very warm Sunday morning as he won the Bexhill-Hastings Link Road 10K in convincing fashion.

In the absence of likely contenders Jeff Pyrah and Max Thomas - both of whom entered but didn’t run - Anderson crossed the line in 33:40 to finish 33 seconds clear of clubmate Rhys Boorman.

Gary Foster made it a 1-2-3 for Hastings AC in a time of 36:40, while Isobel Muir, of Arena 80 AC, was the first lady in 42:53.

From an entry of 1,200, some 1,021 runners of all standards started and finished a race which provided a unique chance to run along the Combe Valley Way, as the new £100m+ link road has been named, before it opens to traffic.

Based at Bexhill Leisure Centre, the undulating run started just north of the London Road junction and headed 5k out to near the Queensway junction in St Leonards and then 5k back to the start.

All finishers received a special commemorative brass having passed through 10,000 years of history. Each kilometre was represented by an historical time zone which has been discovered, from palaeolithic through to modern.

The organisers, the Bexhill and Hastings Lions Clubs, hope to see in excess of £12,000 raised from the event - money which will be used in our community to help those in need.
