Anglers find '˜The Greatest' way to pay tribute to Richard

Competition was fierce as they battled it out in the scorching July sunshine while people who were enjoying a walk along the canal stopped to watch the weigh-in at the end of the match.

Overall winner was Andy King (pictured), with a staggering total weight of 41lb 8oz. Mick White took second place with 12lb 1oz and Bob Stevens was third with 10lb 3oz.

Some anglers were competing not only on an individual basis, but in teams of four and with an impressive overall weight of 62lb 2oz, the clear winners were The Greatest – Steve Worth, Les Elder, Andy King and Alex King.

Raising just under £300 from entry fees and raffle ticket sales, the event was hailed a huge success thanks to the huge efforts of Geoff and Lyn Oram, who organise the match every year as part of their continual fundraising efforts on behalf of Macmillan in memory of Richard, a former member of the club who died of cancer at the age of 21.

Preparations are now under way for next year’s match, which will take place on Sunday, July 29.

Results: 1 Wayne Hart, 3 wrasse, 3 pout, 1 sole, 2lb 13oz; 2 Dan Ottaway, 3 pout, 1 wrasse, 1lb 6oz. Heaviest fish: Wayne Hart, wrasse 9oz, sole 5oz; Dan Ottaway: wrasse 9oz. Five people fished. Two people weighed in. Total aggregate weight: 4lb 3oz.
