Angling clubs set fair to attract new members

A good crowd at the Bognor heritage country fair at Hotham Park meant plenty of people saw a combination of sea and freshwater fishing clubs join forces to display fishing tackle and give out angling tips and advice.

The main aim was to encourage more people to get involved in angling. They particularly wanted to target youngsters who have never tried the sport.

Over the entire weekend organisers were pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm and the sheer number of people wishing to know more about angling in the region in all three angling codes they were promoting – sea, coarse and game.

For added fun they set up a challenge of casting a soft rubber ball attached to a fishing line while aiming it towards a large container target from the casting spot ten metres away to test general casting skills and rod control.

It proved really popular among new anglers, many of whom had never held a rod before. A high percentage hit the target on their very first cast.

All the fishing groups taking part at the fair deemed it a complete success and can’t wait to participate next year.

Contributing were Bognor Regis Amateur Angling Society (sea), Petworth & Bognor AC (freshwater), the West Kent & Sussex Sea Fishing Club (sea), Steve Batten (local fly fishing coach) and Sussex Fisheries (IFCA).
