Angmering Gymnastics set up cheerleading squad

ANGMERING Gymnastics have started their own cheerleading squad, Angmering Galaxy, and are currently recruiting new members.

The club offers cheerleading classes for girls aged six to 18, including beginners and more experienced cheerleaders and gymnasts.

Cheerleading at Angmering Gymnastics was set up by head coach, Julie Oakes, who said: “I noticed many gymnasts leaving the sport in their teenage years due to an increase in school work and other interests, so we have introduced cheerleading to help keep teenagers in sport for longer.”

Cheerleading compromises of difficult stunting, synchronised jumps, dance and gymnastics skills, including tumbling, all performed in time to music.

Cheerleader and gymnast, Parris Louise Moore, said: “I really like it because it’s so much fun and I get to be a flyer. I love being chucked around all the time.”

The club’s facilities include a large floor area, a sprung tumble run, trampolines and a gymnastics pit for safe progressions of stunts and tumbling skills.

All of Angmering Galaxy’s coaches are qualified in both cheerleading and gymnastics and all classes follow the strict safety guidelines set out by British Gymnastics.

Oakes added: “It is important for parents to know that if their child is taking part in an activity that could be dangerous, every possible procedure is in place to minimise any risk to their child.”

The club are aiming to compete in their first competition at Future Cheer’s International cheerleading and dance competition in July this year.
