Another second half super show

For the second successive weekend, South Saxons overturned a half time deficit with a feast of second half goals.

The 6-2 win away to Middleton & Bognor means Saxons sit third in South Hockey League Sussex Area - Division One at the midway point in the season, two points behind leaders Mid-Sussex II.

Already missing captain Paddy Cornish, Saxons were reduced to the bare XI when an unwell Harry Tomlinson dropped out. Saxons dominated possession during the first half, but the inability to finish their chances meant they reached the break trailing 2-0 on a bobbly pitch.

Stand-in skipper Dan Burnett was pushed up-front after the interval and responded by scoring twice to level the scores. A George Eldridge penalty flick put Saxons ahead and Burnett teed up Adam Smithers to make it 4-2.

Eldridge drove home following a short corner for number five and man of the match Burnett combined with Will Orr for Jamie Busbridge to round-off the scoring with a simple tap in.

Burnett said: “It could easily have been more and I think we probably deserved a bit more.” Saxons’ next league game is away to Penguin on Saturday January 12.

Saxons: Wedmore; Cload, Reed, Watters; Burnett, Eldridge, Coombs, Stainsby; Busbridge, Orr, Smithers.
