Ardingly Rowing Club’s Junior squad shine at Dorney Lake

They were competing at The Ball Cup which exists to promote and develop competitive racing between small and emerging clubs who otherwise tend to face athletes who benefit from professional coaching and substantial facilities.

There were 34 Clubs entered in the event - Ardingly Rowing Club came 5th in the final league table with 2 Golds, 3 Silvers and 3 Bronze medals. Illness and impending A’ level exams meant that some of the squad were unable to race, so plans are afoot to do even better in 2016.

Our youngest squad Member, Ellie, raced for the first time in her single scull, not many 12year olds start their racing career at an Olympic venue.

Three of our rowers came away with two medals each, Abi P winning two Golds - one on her own in a single scull and one when she teamed up with Rosie C

in a double, Rosie also winning Bronze in the single. Alex S earned two silver medals (in a double with Todd B and in a single scull on his own).

Our third silver came from 13 year olds Anna C and Millie W. Additional Bronze medals were won by Georgie K in her single scull and the J15 quad scull of Sarah M, Sarah M, Florence M and Hope W coxed by Caitlin H. Rory B just missed out with a very close 4th place which still earned points in the overall competition.

Our Coaches and the rowers’ parents spent all day running up and down the 1000m course encouraging the whole squad and the Club spirit was palpable. Carlos Scovell told us, ‘My son and daughter are still buzzing. It was worth all the effort to see the delight on the faces of the Coaches when the medals kept rolling in. The rowers exceeded our wildest expectations’.

The whole Club is proud of the Junior Squad and how they represented Ardingly Rowing Club on and off the water.

The Juniors now pass the honours to the Masters who have 30 crews entered at the British Rowing Masters Championships at the National WaterSports Centre in Nottingham next weekend.
