Ashes hero Trescothick plays his shots on visit to Chichester

ONE of the top batsmen in the country visited Chichester to show off his talents and pass on some cricketing tips to an impressed audience of fans.

Somerset and former England opener Marcus Trescothick, one of England’s 2005 Ashes heroes, spent three hours at the Game Set & Match complex in Quarry Lane.

The visit was arranged in conjunction with bat manufacturer Mongoose, with whom Tresco has just signed. He tested himself against the centre’s bowling machine and then allowed some keen young local cricketers to have a bowl at him.

Given that some of the best bowlers in the world have struggled to dismiss Trescothick down the years, it was no real surprise that no-one got him out.

Becca Stemp, a director at Game Set & Match, said: “It was a fabulous day and Marcus was superb. He’d driven all the way from Taunton for the afternoon after a training session was Somerset, then had to drive straight back for a cricket dinner.

“We allowed 60 people per session into our nets to watch him and each was jam-packed. We miked him up so he could explain the shots he was playing and it was a real insight into batting techniques.”

Game Set & Match hope Sussex skipper and England World Cup all-rounder Michael Yardy will be their next star visitor.
