Athlete breaks championship record

Katie Garland set a new championship record at the Sussex Schools Combined Events Championships.

The Bexhill High School student clinched the county title after amassing a total of 2,881 points at the Withdean Stadium, Brighton.

Garland equalled her personal best in the hurdles with 12.2 seconds and went further than ever before in the shot with 7.67m. She also set a personal best in the long jump with 5.00m.

Of the other five Hastings AC girls on show, Robyn Mackay (Helenswood) finished eighth with a total of 1,932, and personal bests in the 800m with 2.48.5 seconds and the hurdles with 13.2 seconds and the shot with 5.43m.

Just behind Mackay in ninth was Louise Nash (Helenswood) with 1,787 points, and a personal best in the hurdles with 16.9 seconds, shot with 5.68m and long jump with 4.09m.

Rebecca Haggar (Helenswood) came 10th with a total of 1,784, and personal bests in the 75m hurdles with 15.5 seconds, the high jump with 1.20m and 800m with 2.41.8.
