Athletic club 1-2 in Bexhill 5K

No less than 120 runners completed the inaugural Alex Hall Memorial 5K course on Bexhill seafront.

This was the second race in the annual Bexhill Runners and Triathletes 5K series and is named after a club member who sadly died earlier this year.

Hastings Athletic Club took the top two spots with Joshua Varney winning in 16:49 and Sean Parker-Harding second in 16:57. The third place runner was Luke McWilton in 17:29.

In the ladies’ race, Emily Proto of Arena 80 AC repeated her strong performance from the May race, placing in the top 10 runners overall and again taking a decisive victory in 19:06. Sue Fry came in second in 19:51 with local Bexhill Runner Becci Holdaway third in a personal best time of 20:10.

Eleven members of Bexhill Runners & Triathletes completed the race. They were led home by JP Brophy, who came 9th in 19:24. Octogenerian Eddie Dolan won his age group in 36:14.

All funds raised by the club from the race - which was held in overcast and calm conditions - will go to the Alex Hall Memorial Fund, and will be used to promote and support sport in Bexhill, particularly among the young.

Seventy-seven children took part in the 500m, 1K and 2K races shortly before the main race. See Friday’s Bexhill Observer for the full article and more pictures.
