Badminton ace out to hold court

Cathy Bargh is relishing the prospect of representing her country in global competition.

The Sedlescombe-based badminton talent flies out to Canada tomorrow (Friday) ahead of next week’s BWF World Senior Championships in Richmond.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to it. Positions to represent England are highly sought after and it gives me great pleasure to be playing. I’m revved up and raring to go.”

Bargh will be playing in the over-45 women’s singles and women’s doubles. Although seeded fourth in the singles, she and Kay Vickers (Cheshire) are unseeded in the doubles. Both events will be played as a straight knockout.

The coach at Freedom Leisure Summerfields has a bye in round one of the singles and will take on Nagamma Muddaiah (India) or Charlotte Bucksteegen (Germany) in the last 16.

Bargh and Vickers will face the Canadian pair of Susan Rogers and Denise Vines in round one of the doubles for the right to meet the Indian combination of Neera Pasricha and Gangotri Tolia.

It will be Bargh’s second BWF World Senior Championships appearance having competed in Spain two years ago. She has won silver and bronze in the latest two European Championships, and defeated both of last year’s European Championship finalists to strike gold at the 95th All England Seniors Open Championships during April.
