Basement Jaxx bring Goodwood Friday-night series to epic end

It may have rained for Goodwood's final fixture in this year's Three Friay Nights series '“ but at least the crowd were able to sing in it.

Global house duo Basement Jaxx played to a sell-out crowd as they brought the curtain down on ths sixth series of the mid-summer music and racing nights on the Downs.

Following some record-breaking attendances during the first half of the season at Goodwood, the course welcomed 12,464 racegoers, the largest number ever recorded at one of the Friday night fixtures.

On the track, Megan Nicholls – daughter of champion jump racing trainer Paul Nicholls – clearly enjoys the party atmosphere at the West Sussex track.

She had her debut winner at Goodwood on the first 3FN meeting this season and enjoyed her second winner at the course aboard Kesselring, a 3/1 victor for trainer Richard Hannon.

Sir Michael Stoute saddled a treble on the day, following up his win in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot with a double on the card at Goodwood.

Alyday was ridden clear by Ted Durcan in the closing stages, outpacing her nearest rival Beauty Sleep to win the Nyetimber Rose Maiden Fillies Stakes. Peloponnese took the Nyetimber Demi-sec Fillies Stakes in similar style to complete Stoute’s Downs double.

National Hunt trainer Warren Greatrex enjoyed a rare winner on the flat and a first at Goodwood when Boite made light work of the competition, taking the Russian Standard Original Stakes in decisive fashion.

Other winners were Mad Endeavour for Martin Lane and Shahaama for Frederik Tylicki, on a night when three of the six winners were favourites and two winners were tipped on the Observer website.

Racing returns to Goodwood from July 26 to 30 – the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
