Organisers of the contest set up a free fishing trip for youngsters on the Littlehampton charter boat Chinquita, skippered by Larry Halliday.

The young crew were full of excitement – it was, for the majority, their very first time on a boat or even out at sea.

Once they motored up the River Arun their nerves were eased as they watched the swans swim by and waved at by-standers.

The weather and sea conditions were ideal – it was flat and calm and there was hardly a breeze.

Chinquita motored out and anchored up a few miles from the shoreline, and as the fishing lines went down to the seabed they instantly found fish.

Starting with a few mackerel using shrimp rigs, the youngsters reeled in a few fish – a brilliant sight to witness, sometimes needing the assistance of a couple of the adult helpers on board.

The boat headed slightly further out to catch some other species, including black bream, rays, smoothounds and tope.

The youngsters were amazed to see their first small sharks caught and released. It was a fantastic day at sea and hopefully will have hooked some anglers of the future.

A massive thank-you went to skipper Halliday.
