Bexhill run into trouble

The ability to finish the chances created was the difference between these two well-matched sides as United's winless run in Sussex Division Three stretched to five games.

Manager Len Watkins said: "It was a very good game and it was very even Stevens, you couldn't choose between the sides. We had them under an awful lot of pressure and they found it hard to cope. I really thought that a point was the least we would get out of the game but they were more clinical than us."

The first half was played at a very quick tempo with both sides playing some attractive football. Bexhill were quicker in the tackle and dominated possession but joint leaders Wadhurst had the better chances and were unlucky not to take the lead from a goal-line scramble.

But they did go in front just before half time when a corner from the left was bundled in by central defender Newick.

Bexhill dominated the early stages of the second half and eventually got their reward through a Dominic Bigg header following good work by Ashley Weddle and Andy Matthews.

At this point the visitors looked favourites to go on and win but the game turned on the hour mark. Symes was brought down in the Wadhurst penalty area but to everyone's amazement the referee ignored the appeals. To add insult to injury Tim Bigg was penalised for an innocuous challenge and Wadhurst's quickly taken free-kick was headed home by Warren.

Wadhurst killed off the game six minutes from time with a well taken third goal from Molyneux. Bexhill take on Tackleway in the first round of the Hastings Intermediate Cup at Barley Lane on Saturday October 25, kick-off 2.30pm.
