Bexhill up to third after latest win

BEXHILL United moved up to third in Sussex Division Three with a 3-0 win away to Haywards Heath Town.

This victory means they have gone eight games unbeaten in the league, a remarkable turnaround considering they lost their opening three fixtures of the campaign.

Even more encouragingly, the trip to Hurstpierpoint on Saturday December 4 will be their ninth away game out of 12 leaving them with a highly favourable run in.

Manager Billy Trivett said: "When December's fixtures came out I thought if we can get through them unbeaten and we're in the top three, I really think we can do it because we've got this run of home games coming up.

"There's some really tough teams in this division and it's been a brilliant turnaround. The club itself has shown a tremendous amount of character. A lot of players could have wanted to go after the first three games but they've dug in and worked and worked."

And they had to work in order to see off Haywards Heath Town on Saturday. They may be bottom of the table but it seems as if there has been another scheme of financial investment at Sussex football's perennial under-achievers. Several players had been drafted in from the Sutton and Croydon areas along with a new manager and Trivett believes "they are a different side now".

But so too, seemingly, are Bexhill as an "absolutely magnificent" defensive performance paved the way for the front men to claim their sixth win in eight league games.

Andy Matthews opened the scoring 15 minutes in, following up Dave Carey's shot for his second goal in successive games. Carey notched his 11th of the campaign to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute and Wes Tate notched his fourth in three fixtures 12 minutes later.
