Bexhill win coveted Bideford Bowl

BEXHILL Rowing Club stormed into the history books after winning the most sought after trophy in the sport - the Bideford Bowl.

Competing in the 2002 South Coast Rowing Championships at Torbay, the men's senior four of Mark Mitchell, Gus Gumbrell, Paul Mercer, Matt Mitchell and cox Rebecca Dawes roared to a three-quarters of a length win over Lymington and straight into rowing folklore.

Mark Mitchell said: "When we stepped up to collect the Bideford Bowl to constant cheers of 'Bexhill...Bexhill...Bexhill' I realised the full support and backing that had enabled us to achieve what can only be described as a dream."
