Blue Star Men make a good start in the higher leagues

The newly promoted Horsham Blue Star Men’s team travelled to Mile End Stadium on Saturday and made a promising start in the first of the season’s Southern League matches.

Having gained promotion to the First Division last year the team were unsure how they would perform in the higher division, but a good all-round performance saw them finish fourth out of the six clubs competing.

The best Blue Star performance of the match came in the A string 400m, where Alex Best stormed through the field over the final 50m to grab a fine win in 50.8seconds.

Elsewhere Jack Milnthorpe, competing in his first ever senior match, showed no nerves in winning the high jump with a leap of 1.75m. The pole vault provided a double first, with James Mackman clearing 3.30m to win the A string and Joe West, another youngster competing in his first senior match, clearing 3.10m to win the B string.
In the javelin, Luke Johnson took a third place in the A event with a throw of 40.54m with Bonizwe McFadden throwing 34.22m to win the B event. Gorm Young took second place in the hammer with 22.42m and then took third place in the shot putt with 9.50m.
On the track Jason Wooldridge, having travelled down from York University to compete, looked impressive in winning the B string 800m in 2m 2.2s and then took third place in the A string steeplechase with a time of 10m 50.4s. Adrian Fautly, having run 2m 5.8s in the 800m then took a third place in the 1,500m in 4m 22.5s.

The final match positions were: 1. Herne Hill 226pts. 2. Kent 208. 3. South London 156. 4. Horsham 141. 5. Victoria Park 133. 6. Hercules Wimbledon 72.
A promising start to the season and with the next match at Broadbridge Heath on May 18 the team will look to improve on their league position.
